As the 1980s gave way to the '90s, iconic sound systems like Saxon were shifting their style from lovers rock to the dancehall sound that was rapidly expanding from the Caribbean and across the diaspora.

Saxon's leading star, Smiley Culture had already broken through and enjoyed chart success with his seminal crossover hit "Police Officer" in 1984 (and to a lesser extent, the equally influential "Cockney Translation" when it was re-released the following year). So by the end of the decade, Saxon Studio had a rabid fanbase up and down the country, especially in cities with significant Caribbean populations.

Here are two of the sound system's other big hitters, Tippa Irie and Papa Levi, joined by Daddy Freddy, at a massive show at St. Paul's in Bristol. Filmed as part of a segment on The Word, this was an early glimpse at the raw power of a proper soundclash, delivered by three masters of the art form. Even the host wasn't quite prepared, having planned to measure the crowd's reaction for each act without quite realising that the volume would be ear-splitting from the get-go.
