HERITAGE: Saxon Sound & Highteous Bring Energy And Vibes To This Deptford Rollerball Park (1983)

This may not be the best quality recording, but it's such a precious moment in time it's absolutely worth overlooking.

Gathered together to soundtrack skaters at Deptford's long-forgotten Rollerball Park, Papa Levi and the Saxon Sound and Highteous sound systems gathered together to soundtrack skaters.

Even in the early 1980s, the Saxon crew were held up as legends in soundsystem culture. Founded in the '70s by Lloyd 'Musclehead' Francis and Denis Rowe in South London, they were among the first generation of British-born Black kids to start their own soundsystems.

Saxon were also pivotal in putting the UK on the map in soundsystem culture. They were they first UK soundsystem to be invited to Reggae Sunsplash in Jamaica and have been cited as huge influences to everyone from David Rodigan to Chuck D and KRS-One.

It's just a brief clip of the day, sadly, but between the Saffron channel and Ruffhouse (who supplies Saffron with a lot of his footage), there's plenty more footage of the Saxon crew carting their speakers all across London.
