This year it'll be 20 years since Pay As U Go alum Maxwell D invaded the Top 40 with his stone cold classic garage anthem "Serious". As was the Pay As U Go trademark, "Serious" stood at the rowdier end of the garage spectrum and had more than a little influence on the grime sound that was waiting in the wings.

It was fitting then, that Novelist, Capo Lee, So Large, Bruza and Tempa T should join Maxwell on the remix last October. That version ended up being one of the centrepieces of the soundtrack to Femi Oyeniran and Nicky 'Slim Ting' Walker's Against All Odds, bridging the gap between the two generations and taking the tune to its logical conclusion. However, while that 2020 version was a welcome and well-executed one, the original "Serious" will always be worth coming back to.
