YouTube Spotlights The Complex World Of Drill With Controversial New Doc 'Terms & Conditions: A UK Drill Story'

As YouTube moves into making original content, their latest documentary is making the headlines.

Terms & Conditions: A UK Drill Story is out now and takes a deep dive into the world of UK drill, talking to some of the artists and investigating why the sound is so controversial as well as the tabloid-parroted line that the genre is directly linked to gang culture and violent crime.

Directed by Brian Hill with help from author, journalist, YouTuber and commentator Mr. Montgomery, Terms & Conditions: A UK Drill Story also features interviews and contributions from Skengdo x AM, Lavida Loca, Drillminister, and more.

What's most controversial about this whole thing is that it was barely two years ago that YouTube themselves purged a whole stack of drill videos and, more widely, have made a big show of scrubbing any and all content that could be perceived as violent from the site.

Luke Hyams, Head of Originals at YouTube EMEA, said: "Music has the unique power to unify but can also be incredibly divisive. Drill music is one of those genres. It's visceral, it's meaningful and it's aggressive. But it also tells the real story of real people enduring real struggle. While the power of the music is undeniable — visceral, confrontational and rich with rapid-fire rhymes — drill has developed a divisive reputation. As the documentary uncovers, it's an immensely complicated issue."
