Young Black Men In London Were Stopped And Searched By Police More Than 20,000 Times During Lockdown

July 23, 2020

Analysis has found that young Black men were stopped and searched by police more than 20,000 times in London during the coronavirus lockdown.

Estimates show that of the total population there are between 70,000 and 80,000 young Black males in the capital, which means that this figure of 21,950 amounts to approximately 30% of the whole demographic.

An analysis by the office of the Home Affairs Select Committee Chair, Yvette Cooper, found that 80% of those 21,950 searches between March and May resulted in no further action. A lot of young Black people are understandably sick and tired of the state of the police and they feel that they are being wrongfully targeted, and now the data backs it up.

This data was revealed to the public after British athlete Bianca Williams was issued an apology from the Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick after she was stopped, searched and handcuffed.

Changes need to be made and they need to be made quickly.
