Yazmin Lacey Provides A Soothing Balm For Our Times With Debut LP 'Voice Notes'

March 06, 2023

Yazmin Lacey, the soul sister long heralded as one of the most exciting voices in UK jazz, has dropped her debut album Voice Notes. Released via On Your Own Records, Voice Notes gives full body to the promise shown on her 2020 EP Morning Matters.

The project was built organically, using voice notes in Lacey's phone as the inspiration for this stellar debut. Exploring themes like love, mindfulness, and a broad spectrum of emotions, Voice Notes is probably best described as a remedy for the tension and conflict of our times. It's also a welcome and necessary addition to the UK jazz canon.

Offering her own description of the album, Lacey shares: "I wrote this album for me… music is the place where I make sense of my feelings, it always has been and Voice Notes is no different. It's a collection of responses to what was going on in my life and the world around me. I wrote this for my own peace of mind… and by track 14 I think I gained some. I hope this record makes people feel good; I want people to feel seen and heard".

Executive produced by Dave Okumu who himself has produced for UK acts like The Invisible and Arlo Parks, Voice Notes is an essential listen for jazz and soul lovers alike.
