Rare '90s Jungle Gems Unearthed For New Two-Volume Compilation 'Who Say Reload'

February 27, 2023

Next month, a new book charting the explosive age of '90s jungle and D&B will be released via Velocity Press titled Who Say Reload: The Stories Behind The Classic Drum & Bass Records Of The 90s. Written by author Paul Terzulli with photography from Eddie Otchere, the book will chart the birth and rise of the sound as an oral history with contributions from Goldie, Andy C, Roni Size and DJ Hype, as they track the technology, the samples and the tunes that defined the era.

To accompany the new book, Terzulli and Otchere have also put together a two-part compilation, also called Who Say Reload, that gathers together classics and rarities from Slipmatt, Optical, Roni Size & Represent, Nookie, Origin Unknown and more. Until now, many of the tracks have been all but impossible to come by—at least without paying eye-watering prices on Discogs.

On what sparked the idea to write the book in the first place, Terzulli shares: "Despite the impact jungle had when it first hit, there was always an element of mystery about the music and its creators. I felt that the stories of those responsible should be collated and presented in one place, rather than scattered across podcasts, YouTube videos and obsolete websites, or as anecdotes flickering past on a social media timeline."

Velocity Press will publish Who Say Reload: The Stories Behind The Classic Drum & Bass Records Of The 90s on March 5. You can pre-order it here. You can order the vinyl of Who Say Reload Volume One here.
