A Shocking One Third Of UK Nightclubs Shut By The End Of 2022

January 25, 2023

A report has revealed that between the pandemic and the end of 2022, one-third of nightclubs in the UK have closed their doors for good.

The report states that more than 4,800 hospitality businesses have been affected by the strains of the pandemic and the cost of living crisis, leading to permanent closure. Conducted by AlixPartners and CGA, the report makes it depressingly clear that the nightlife industry is now one-third smaller than it was before the pandemic.

Sharing his reflections on the report, Night Time Industries Association (NTIA) CEO, Michael Kill says, "Nightclubs are one of the greatest impacted by cost inflation, with a 6% drop in the 4th quarter of 2022, and now a third smaller than it was before the pandemic reflecting disproportionate support and challenging trading environment.

"The acceptance by the government that businesses will be lost through this crisis takes no account of the people reliant on this sector," Kill says. "The sector is suffering heavily, and needs the financial headroom to recover."

To conclude, the NTIA has appealed to the government to consider extending financial aid to the nightlife sector.
