Actor Clarke Peters Slams Lack Of Opportunities For Black British Actors

September 20, 2017

Apart from a handful of breakout stars like Idris Elba (and his one UK TV show), opportunities for black British actors are sorely lacking and, according to actor Clarke Peters who played Lester Freamon in The Wire, we'll see more and more talent going oversees.

Right now John Boyega can play the lead in a Star Wars film and Daniel Kaluuya can star in horror masterpiece Get Out, but neither can get work in the UK.

They're not the only ones: David Oyelowo, who played Martin Luther King in Selma, and David Harewood, star of Homeland and Supergirl, are just two more in a long list of high-profile black actors who've moved to the States for work.

"They're going where the work is," Clarke Peters told the BBC. "When Britain decides to build up its film industry and compete, then those cats will stay here."

Peters himself was born in New York but moved to Britain for acting work in the 1970s. He concluded that the only way to keep black British talent, and British talent generally, would be "if Pinewood was where Hollywood is and had the same reputation and kudos."
