UK Hip-Hop Icon Sway Has Sadly Passed Away
Sway, the legendary UK hip-hop artist who found fame in the early 2000s and helped change the face of British rap forever, has sadly passed away. He was 44. 🕊️
News of Sway’s passing was shared on Instagram by his close friend, Kream. No cause of death has been announced at the time of writing; he leaves behind four children.
Born Derek Andrew Safo in North London to Ghanaian parents, Sway rose through the underground at a time when British rap was still fighting hard to be heard and respected. For those who remember the Channel U era, his name was impossible to miss; tracks like “Up Your Speed” and “Derek” were pretty much instant classics and helped cement Sway as one of the standout voices coming out of the UK scene.
Then came 2006’s This Is My Demo, the project that took Sway’s career to another level. It was a body of work that refused to choose between the rawness of the roads and the bright lights of the mainstream, earning a Mercury Music Prize nomination and further cementing Sway’s reputation as one of the country’s most respected lyricists
For a generation raised on UK hip-hop, grime, Channel U and the early internet rap circuit, Sway represented possibility. He was proof that an artist could come through the underground, carry the sound and spirit of LDN with him, and earn a place among music’s most coveted names.
We have lost a true pioneer.
May Sway rest in eternal peace 🤍
