Stormzy's New Short Film Distils The Church/Street Dichotomy Of 'GSAP' Into 15 Dramatic Minutes

September 27, 2017

Still riding high from the success of his award-winning, career-defining debut album Gang Signs & Prayer, Stormzy has now released a new short film (directed by Rollo Jackson and produced by Somesuch and The FADER) that expands on the themes he explored on the album—primarily the balance of street life and his faith—with a semi-autobiographical narrative to tie it all together.

The new short film, also titled Gang Signs & Prayer, features four GSAP tracks, "Return of the Rucksack", "Bad Boys" and "100 Bags" woven together to soundtrack the story. In the film, we see a young Stormzy trying to navigate adolescence while being surrounded by strong influences, both good and bad.

"Young youts like myself, that grow up in the hood, we often don't know that we are actually the masters of our own destiny," says Stormzy. "There are so many things that steer us in the wrong direction however, we decide what happens in our own lives and like my album, I endeavoured for this film to portray just that. Derived from my album Gang Signs & Prayer, and written and directed by the legend that is Rollo, I'll let the visual do the talking."

The film was launched at the YouTube Space London where Stormzy, Rollo Jackson, friends, family and a room full of fans came together to celebrate the film. Lucky attendees also received a limited edition zine and some exclusive photography.
