Stormzy Has Finally Returned With New Music

April 26, 2019

Yesterday, Stormzy took to his socials to share a "fan" voice note that urged him to release new music and not be a "dickhead". Then, just after midnight last night, his long-awaited musical return came in the form of a new track entitled "Vossi Bop". Taking its name from a viral dance created by NL Vossi, the track features production from Chris Andoh and a slick video directed by Henry Schofield (Idris Elba makes an appearance, too). It's been a while since we've had any new music from Stormzy, but hopefully we won't have to wait quite as long for the next batch.

In an interview with Beats 1's Julie Adenuga, Stormzy explained the story behind the track: "[NL Vossi] just had this infectious dance, where I'm sure he was, I think he was coming home from somewhere, or... he was either drunk coming home from somewhere, or he went to go get Supermalt. Which is even just more of a cultural touch. He went to get Supermalt, he was on his way back, and he was just dancing to this song. But it was just so infectious, and such a genuine joyous moment that for whatever reason, I went studio a couple weeks later, and I made this song called 'Vossi Bop'. But this is like three years ago; 2016 I made this song. Or 2015. And yeah, I just had the spirit of Vossi in me. I think it just embodies everything that I'm about: the confidence, the humor, the style, the flair, the anarchy, the chaos, just the vibe. All of these things, I was like, 'This is me embodied.'"
