Sadiq Khan Pledges £450,000 To Protect London Venues Devastated By Coronavirus Fallout

September 23, 2020

The effects of COVID-19 have had huge ramifications for our grassroots music venues and many are facing closure. To help limit the effects, London Mayor Sadiq Khan has vowed to provide £450,000 to 141 grassroots music venues "devastated" by the fallout of the coronavirus. He's also pledged to offer venues support that includes assistance on rent disputes, legal advice, and how to work with local councils.

Khan wrote on Twitter: "London's world-leading music venues have been devastated by the impact of COVID-19. That's why I'm giving £450,000 to support 141 grassroots venues across our city, tailored to their unique needs, such as rent disputes, local council discussions or direct financial aid."

In a press release, Khan added: "London's music scene is the envy of the world and integral to our economy at night, but it has been devastated by the impact of COVID-19. I am pleased that we have been able to support music venues with essential advice and support to stay in business, and provide funding for those most in need to cover rent and other ongoing expenses at this challenging time."

500 music venues penned an open letter to the Music Venue Trust asking for urgent support to protect live music venues in June 2020. The following month, the likes of Paul McCartney, Ed Sheeran and Coldplay reiterated the call for help. The support is of course welcomed, however some have pointed out that £450,000 breaks down to less than £4,000 per venue. A £1.57 billion support package was granted by the government in July 2020 and Khan's latest pledge is a step in the right direction to revival, but far from the complete solution.
