Roadworks Charity Shines A Brighter Light On Drill Music With New Documentary 'Beyond The Road'

January 06, 2020

Journalist Ciaran Thapar and MC and ethnomusicologist Mehryar Golestani (aka Reveal) have put their heads together to launch a new charity organisation called Roadworks. The aim of the charity is to help teach young people academic subjects and offer career guidance through the use of drill music — and they've just shared the first music video to come from the initiative.

The organisation has also released a 12-minute documentary dubbed Roadworks: Beyond The Road, giving us insight into how the programme works and the behind-the-scenes story from the shoot. In it, we watch a group of young artists — Rippa, I.D., Tarzan and F2Anti — battle the negative connotations of drill and record a track, also titled "Road Works".

The collaborative new track aims to raise awareness for problems the artists feel affect their communities and spread the message of hope to young people across London, encouraging them to do better. The tune, produced by Ishmatic Beats x Y Muse, is also accompanied by a music video shot by respected UK director Pacman TV.

Roadworks are hoping to spread the word and encourage more young people to participate in the program and shift the negative narrative of drill music all throughout the new year, but in order to do this they need to raise more funding, allowing them to expand and reach more areas across London.

If you are interested in donating to this fantastic programme, head over to the Roadworks website and get in touch.
