March Organised This Weekend In Protest Of Police Murder Of Chris Kaba

September 09, 2022

Following the fatal shooting of 24-year-old Chris Kaba, aka Itch of 67, at the hands of the police, a protest march to Scotland Yard has been organised by Kaba's family. The demonstration will take place tomorrow, September 10, beginning at Parliament Square at 12pm.

Kaba was killed on Monday night following a car chase that ended in Streatham Hill, South London.

Very quickly after the story broke, it soon emerged that Kaba, who was just about to become a father, had not been armed and that officers had allegedly shot Kaba through one of the car's windows.

The Met has since confirmed that no officers have been suspended after the incident, not even the officer who fatally shot Kaba.

Speaking to the MailOnline, a spokesperson said: "All the officers are being treated as witnesses by the IOPC at this stage.

"They are currently not on operational duties due to the post-incident process but no officer is subject to formal restricted duties or suspended.

"The work status of the officers will be regularly reviewed as the IOPC investigation progresses and the IOPC will be consulted before any decisions are made."

The Met also refused to confirm how many officers were involved in the incident: "We await confirmation, as further officers attended the scene to provide first aid and other assistance including with the formal post-incident process."

On Wednesday night, the IOPC announced that a detailed search of the scene had been completed and that "no non-police issue firearm has been recovered from the vehicle or the scene".

Sal Naseem, IOPC London regional director, said: "When the police use fatal force it is important that there is a robust, independent investigation to establish all of the circumstances surrounding what happened.

"It is natural that the community wants answers quickly but I would ask that people refrain from speculation that may be unhelpful to all of those affected."

Chris' father, Prosper Kaba told the BBC: "For us, it is totally racist and criminal and we want all the community, especially the minority community, to see this as a racism case."

Mother Helen Nkama, added: "My heart is broken. I am speechless."

The family has since demanded a homicide investigation be opened and that officers be placed under criminal investigation by the IOPC: "The family of Chris Kaba seek a homicide investigation into his death from the outset.

"We have today told the IOPC of that demand and that we do not want any delay as has happened in other fatal shootings—otherwise we and the wider public can have no confidence that the police will be held to account.

"We are devastated; we need answers and we need accountability. We are worried that if Chris had not been Black, he would have been arrested on Monday evening and not had his life cut short."
