Poppy Ajudha Teases Politically Charged Debut Album With "London's Burning"

November 29, 2021

The last we heard from Poppy Ajudha was the stripped-back "Change My Mind" as well as "Darkest Hour" alongside Daley, taken from Swindle's community-driven project The New World. Now she prepares us for the release of her debut album with the electro-infused track "London's Burning".

Here Poppy attacks subject matters that most would shy away from, like the lasting effects of colonialism, whilst adding fuel to the growing number of youth movements erupting around the globe. Poppy's vocals soar over the electronic soundscape that spills with choppy percussion and subtle effects, all pieced together by producer Joel Compass. This is just a brief glimpse into the world that Poppy is preparing to share with us in her debut album The Power In Us, which is said to explore topics like women's rights, colonial structures and more.

Speaking on the album, Poppy shares: "This album is made up of all the things swimming in my mind, from women's rights, to the right to cross borders, to the power of young people to inspire and be unafraid to rock the boat in the name of progress. Women don't have to be just what they are taught to be, there is so much more to us than Mothers, Sisters, Daughters, Girlfriends and our relation to men. I want men to engage more heavily in feminism and really see how their defiance against it only holds both women and men back."

On the subject of the album, Poppy says: "I wrote this song on the legacy of colonialism and the irony that even when we have taken almost everything from most of the globe, ruining countries and communities throughout history to build our own, we are still so quick to close our doors to those in need, even when it is us who have played the biggest roles in destabilising the countries they come from. It is also a nod to the youth movements desperately trying to change minds and break down stereotypes to create a fairer and more compassionate world."

The Power In Us is set to arrive March 11. While we wait, take in "London's Burning" below.
