Piers James Takes A 'Voyage To Reverie' On Powerful New Project

March 25, 2024

Voyage To Reverie is the new must-listen offering from Piers James. This is his first project since 2021's A Dying Breed, Pt. II and it shows that he's undergone a drastic artistic evolution in that time.

The nine-track EP is a seamless ride through different flavours, sounds and styles, full of colour and top-tier production. Piers draws on Woodie Smalls and Tino GEE to contribute with features that add even more vibrancy to the tape, but James comes with dynamite lyrics of his own—there isn't a single wasted line across the 22-minute run time of the track.

Alongside the project, Piers James has put out a self-directed video for EP closer "Disney S**t And War". A multi-faceted journey in its own right, it touches on everything from racial stereotypes in 20th century media to Grenfell Tower, social deprivation and segregation, and more. It begins with a solo performance piece from performer Theophilus Bailey in dramatic black-and-white, before moving through an animated segment, and another dramatic live-action piece.

Piers shares: "The film shot on 16mm goes through different mediums that showcase the struggles of an artist within the industry as a Black warrior and the fight they must have for independence, as well as the influences this industry and culture can have on children depicted by what's glorified. This includes animations around Black communities and how they were promoted with the stereotypical characteristics within Black men and women."
