Benjamin Zephaniah, One Of Britain's Most Cherished Poets, Dies Aged 65

December 08, 2023

News of the death of one of Britain's most loved poets, Benjamin Zephaniah, was shared by his family yesterday. The Birmingham-born writer, political campaigner and actor was aged 65. The news was shared on his Instagram account by his wife, who informed his following that he'd been diagnosed with a brain tumour eight weeks ago. Fans will be soothed to know that his wife was with him throughout his sickness and was at his side at the time of his passing.

In the same Instagram post, his wife said the following words: "Benjamin was a true pioneer and innovator, he gave the world so much. Through an amazing career including a huge body of poems, literature, music, television, and radio, Benjamin leaves us with a joyful and fantastic legacy."

Regarded as one of the tallest and most important figures in the modern British literature, Benjamin Zephaniah was an avid fighter against the forces of colonialism and empire through his works. Shedding light on the Black British condition and the systems of oppression that exist in the UK and abroad, his presence will be missed by many the world over.
