Nathan Miller Documents Jamaica's Bustling Dancehall Scene In New Film 'God Bless You, My Son'

November 09, 2022

UK filmmaker Nathan Miller shares his latest documentary that spotlights the thriving culture of trap dancehall music in Jamaica, God Bless You, My Son.

Taking us back to the genre's roots, we get an intimate look at the lives of some of the scene's leaders like Govona, Skillibeng, Skeng, and more. We also catch an early glimpse of the new generation of artists who are looking to build on its thriving legacy with their own creative output.

We've seen this battle between authenticity and censorship waged before, particularly with drill, and now dancehall and its trap iteration are facing a growing backlash against its lyrical content.

However, Nathan connects with some locals who express how music and performing can actually create a way out of neighbourhoods ridden with crime and violence. Now more than ever, the documentary emphasises the importance of building up the younger genetation and encouraging their self-expression rather than suppressing their creativity.

It's an essential watch as dancehall music continues to shape and propel Black culture around the world. Take a look below.
