Jazz Musician Myele Manzanza Conjures Up A Mystical Journey On "Brixton Blues"

March 04, 2021

For his latest piece, "Brixton Blues", jazz drummer, producer and composer Myele Manzanza conjures an atmospheric masterpiece that's painful in its intensity, evoking a longing for change.

The trumpet from collaborator James Copus creates an enthralling air of mystery as you walk the darker corners of South London and the combination of exquisite percussion with sparkling piano chords reignite the spirit of the blues. "Brixton Blues" packs a beguiling groove and the trumpet's crescendo is electrifying, soaring towards the jazz cosmos.

Speaking on the creative process of "Brixton Blues", Manzanza says: "In the rehearsals I was going for a more interactive approach, and upon hearing the recordings from that day, I immediately saw I was getting in the way. I decided to wear my Jimmy Cobb 'Kind Of Blue' hat and focus on holding the space for the soloists to speak. I'm glad I did, as Ashley and James ended up delivering masterfully clear, understated solos that are a great study for any musician looking for a master study in making statements behind your instrument."

"Brixton Blues" is taken from Crisis & Opportunity Vol. 1 – London, due April 2. Pre-order it here.
