Earlier this month, Mychelle took to Instagram to announce that she'd completed work on a new EP, It's Not You, It's Me, and that she'd be releasing it imminently. She'd been building up to this for a while now, beginning last November with "Tightrope" and continuing with February's "Hurts". Now we have the full thing and it comes with the release of its third single, "Magical".

In the promo material, she confesses that the latter single was her effort to break away from her reputation for "sad love songs", as she puts it. India Arie's "Video", she goes on to say, was a key inspiration and with that, she explores subjects like self-esteem, colourism, and body image issues, all set against the deep grooves of Eddie Allen's production.

The rest of the EP largely follows suit, while still keeping some of the "sad love song" elements of old. In essence, the five tracks together explore a coming-of-age period for Mychelle as she works out who she is, what she's about, and what she wants from the world. She also broadens her sound a bit from the R&B and neo-soul of previous releases to take in elements of pop, indie, and folk.

Speaking on the EP's inspiration, Mychelle shares: "I wanted to share vulnerability alongside moments of comfortability and self-respect. They all co-exist when going through a breakup or the ending of a friendship. It's sad to go through it but it's also important to know when you deserve better."
