Lucy DK Walks Us Through A Disappointing Family Reunion On "Southbank"

May 26, 2020

Continuing what we described as an impressive run back in November last year, Leicester-born Lucy DK has still yet to falter as she releases her new single "Southbank". This is her third of the year and offers the latest chapter in the deeply personal story of her relationship with her absentee father.

Picking up where last year's "Family Drama" left off (It's been years since I seen my father / Now he says he wants us back), "Southbank" takes us to their reunion. Backed by an understated and subtle production, her smoky vocals take centre stage as she updates on the story. Rather than the cathartic or at least emotional reunion she was hoping for, it instead turns out to be somewhat anticlimactic. Now that I'm grown I've got nothing to say / Neither have you, it's a real shame, she sings with more than a hint of disappointment in her voice.

"'Southbank' is the best representation of who I am as an artist," she explains. "I'm here for turning daddy issues into great flows. I met my absent father for the first time on the Southbank, after he reached out with a Facebook wave. What was meant to be this huge, monumental moment was actually a bit of a let-down. I didn't know how to feel about it until I was in the studio. All the disappointment just kind of flooded out of me. But making the song really helped me let go of that. It captured and held the frustration so that I could get back to being a bad bitch as quickly as possible. And everyone was immediately like: this song is hard. Which felt great."
