Jorja Smith Shows Growth And Range On New Album 'Falling Or Flying'

September 29, 2023

Jorja Smith has dropped her second studio album, Falling or Flying. After the string of top notch and varied singles that she has blessed us with this year, the full project has been eagerly anticipated.

The Walsall-born singer has matured in many ways in the five years since her debut album Lost And Found, and these 16 new tracks give Jorja the space to update us on her artistic evolution. From the sound of the album to the launching of her new independent label, FAMM, we're now witnessing a fully realised version of the 16-year-old that burst onto the scene in 2016.

Falling Or Flying shows Jorja's range to be broad and brilliant, with the UK funky bounce of song-of-the-summer contender "Little Things", the sultry heat of "Feelings" featuring J Hus, and the indie-adjacent "Go Go Go" all managing to make for a varied yet somehow cohesive listen. The mood of the album is split in accordance with its title; the first half is where Jorja flies at her confident best, before sinking into the insecurity and self-doubt of falling.

There's plenty of risk involved when being so experimental, but Falling Or Flying sees Jorja relish the challenge. "I like this world that I've just come into. And I'm still figuring things out. Always figuring things out." Jorja has said about the album. "This is the first time I'm putting stuff out there that I can connect with right now."
