The Jamal Edwards Self Belief Trust Reveals Legacy Initiatives

February 28, 2024

It's been two years since the tragic passing of Jamal Edwards, but the benefits of his life's work are still being felt today.

Founded by his mother, Brenda Edwards, who is also the Chair of the Trustees, and her Executive Director, Ophelia Froud, the Jamal Edwards Self Belief Trust was set up in remembrance of his inspiring virtues and immeasurable legacy.

On February 20, Jamal's mother, Brenda Edwards, and her daughter, Tanisha Artman, brought together supporters from across the #SelfBelief community to celebrate Jamal Edwards MBE, and to announce an update on the work of the Jamal Edwards Self Belief Trust.

Hosted at Notting Hill restaurant and music venue Archer Street, it was a fittingly A-list event. The stars were in abundance that night, including MOBO Awards founder Kanya King, radio DJ Trevor Nelson, Dawn Butler MP, MCs Lady Leshurr, Akala and Big Narstie, singers Terri Walker and Kele Le Roc, newsreader Charlene White, and countless more.

At the event, three new social impact initiatives were revealed by the JESB Trust to be:

The Self Belief Launchpad: creating early career access for underrepresented young people in London.

The Self Belief Sanctuary: West London sanctuaries for 18-24-year-old care leavers at risk of homelessness to help get them into permanent housing.

The Self Belief Hub: a pioneering community space for young and old to learn and create together.

Speaking about her son's legacy, Brenda Edwards said: "Jamal was a pioneer, a disruptor and a force for good that opened doors and brought hope to so many. We want to create a remarkable legacy for a remarkable human by doing the same for young people across the UK and beyond."

Ophelia Froud added: "The Jamal Edwards Self Belief Trust has an ambitious vision to amplify the Self Belief of young people throughout the UK. It is much needed and using my wide campaign and content experience I am excited to support Brenda in fulfilling her son's vision in such a bold, creative and inspirational way."

Tim Campbell MBE said: "Jamal was a once-in-a-lifetime light whose sole purpose was to uplift others and help them to realise their true potential, through the JESB Trust led by his amazing mother, Brenda, that will live on inspiring its beneficiaries to have unwavering Self Belief."

All those familiar with Jamal personally, or even if only by name, knew him to be an avid ambassador for the power of self-belief and achieving success, so it's fitting that his legacy will live on through both SBTV and the JESB Trust. For more info on the Trust, head here.
