East London Rhymer Isatta Sheriff Addresses The State Of The Music Industry On "Will They Try"

August 31, 2022

Isatta Sheriff has a few things to get off her chest, chiefly some burning issues in the music industry that are reaching breaking point. Keen to address them head-on, she's reconnected with Italian producer Koralle—who also produced much of the EP its taken from—for her potent new single "Will They Try".

Koralle constructs a soulful beat that echoes with an ambient vocal sample and supple horns and it's the perfect backdrop for Isatta's observant bars. She speaks on the treatment of Black women in hip-hop and dance music, questioning if and when things will actually change for the better.

"This is the most important track on the EP as it addresses the exploitation of Black women in hip-hop, and the exploration of hip-hop in general. We have started to talk about the countless Black female singers and songwriters in dance and hip-hop music who go uncredited in the U.K, and I wanted to extend the conversation with Black female rappers and explore the racial politics and misogynoir connected to this.

"People often ask the same questions regarding women's position in hip-hop, and I ask will they try to understand the full scope of the problem and then DO something, because the conversation is stuck and needs to progress."

"Will They Try" is another lyrically impressive performance from Isatta and is the third single taken from her upcoming EP Eat The Kiwi Skin, slated to arrive September 23.
