Image Of Smoke Boys' Swift Used By Australian Senator In Anti-Immigration Propaganda

January 10, 2019

The image of Smoke Boys' Swift was included in an anti-immigration propaganda tweet by Fraser Anning—the Senator of the Australian state of Queensland—without his permission.

The image was originally taken by Dean Martindale for Notion Magazine back in 2016 but had been edited in with other pictures such as a burning car and crowds, accompanied by the caption "Dear Australians, If we are not careful we will end up like Germany, UK or even worse South Africa. We must stop importing dangerous third world criminals and deport the ones already here. Like and share if you agree we need an immigration crackdown now".

Swift himself has since voiced his frustration about the misuse of his image on his social media accounts but this isn't the first time Smoke Boys have been in this situation. Last year the Daily Mail used their image in an article about gang warfare in Melbourne.

While Fraser Anning has not yet responded, this incident follows a recent scandal in which he was widely condemned for spending taxpayers' money on personal travel arrangements for his family, as well as for attending a "racist" and "fascist" far-right rally described by Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison as having "extreme and offensive racist views that have no place in our society".
