Both Wiley and Slimzee's roles in the foundation and development of grime are long and (mostly) well-documented. Over the years though, as is often the case when you get older, their paths diverged. Wiley found mainstream success while Slimzee was kneecapped by a particularly egregious use of the infamous ASBOs.

Thankfully, things are better now and although grime isn't quite at the forefront in the way it has been in the past, it's fair to see it's found a more stable level of success and fandom. It also seems to have reunited the two old friends and the pair have been working together a lot more in recent years.

Launched last year, one of Slimzee's newer endeavours is a new series of sessions put out via the now legit station he co-founded way back, Rinse FM. The first edition of the newly-minted Pirate Sessions kicked off in September (originally via Facebook) and of course featured Wiley, recapturing the magic they first found in the late '90s together.

Slimzee supplies a well-balanced mix of old and new riddims while the Godfather gives us what is essentially a lyrical greatest hits with bars from all eras sitting side by side. Whatever else should follow in the Pirate Sessions, Slimzee can rest assured that it couldn't have started any better.
