HERITAGE: Wariko Raps On The Issues He Witnessed Growing Up In Nottingham (2005)

Back in the mid to late 2000s, Nottingham grime and rap hero Wariko was a consistent source of razor-sharp lyrics and vivid imagery. He also laid a lot of groundwork for the current generation, reminding everyone there was a whole world outside London.

Mixtapes like 2012's Double Time Poet gave us stacks of hyped-up grime bangers that drew from the same bouncy energy found in bassline (his verse on Jammer's lively "Lord Of The Mics" posse cut is also worth checking out), but he was no stranger to rap and the soul-searching, pain-filled side.

This freestyle, recorded for Lowbudget.TV, was Wariko at his rawest, going into searing detail in his depiction of the unglamorous, often bleak sides of street life. He's not self-pitying or playing for shock, just brutally honest.
