HERITAGE: Tippa Irie And Macka B Clash At Birmingham's Maximillian's Club (1986)

Every now and again the stars align for something truly historic. That's what happened in 1986 at Maximillian's Club in Birmingham. At the time, London and the Midlands were hotbeds of reggae and dancehall talent and on one particular night, most of them came together for an A-list clash hosted by Masterblaster Hi-Fi.

The promoters weren't wrong when they billed this as "the clash of the century". Saxon sound system's Trevor Ranks was on deck duties, while Saxon's Tippa Irie and Papa Levi took on Pato Banton and Macka B. Also there on the night were King Zukie and Corporal Billy (who later form part of the Luv Injection soundsystem), Admiral Jerry, Private Stylee, Lickshot Judah, Sister Smurf, Bongo D, and Bonito Star.

Sadly, a lot of recordings like these — which were originally recorded on cassette or VHS — are disappearing, becoming damaged or lost over time. So special mention has to go to archivists like Saffron Saffron for keeping them alive.
