HERITAGE: The Legendary Ms Dynamite Captures Her Inner Strength On This Live Rendition Of "Neva Soft" (2011)

March 29, 2023

In 2011, Ms Dynamite was on a mission. She'd been away from the music game for a few years, time spent starting a family and raising her young son, but she was ready to get back on it.

The previous year, she'd scored two big hits, collaborating with DJ Zinc on "Wile Out", Katy B on "Lights Out" and Redlight on "What You Talking About", but the time had come for a solo hit of her own. She'd been talking about an album, titled Democracy, as early as 2009 and had even promised a lead single, "Bad Gyal", but those were pushed back while she focused on other ventures, including appearances on Hell's Kitchen (where she earned a very respectable fourth place) and as an expert adviser on Goldie's Band: By Royal Appointment.

By 2011, a solo single had appeared—"Neva Soft". Produced by Labrinth, it meshed her love of reggae with a D&B influence that fitted well with the previous year's collabs. It was a storming return after a five-year hiatus and received positive reviews. However, for reasons unknown, the Democracy LP never materialised.

Sadly, we're in another quiet spell—save for a collab with Clipz, Jaykae and Ms Banks a couple of years ago—but hopefully that won't last forever. In the meantime, take in this rock version of "Neva Soft" that she performed with a live band for The Guardian.
