HERITAGE: The Late Jamal Edwards Captures This Iconic Acoustic Version Of Maverick Sabre's "I Need" For SBTV (2010)

Few in this world have ever had the kind of foresight the late, great Jamal Edwards had. He had a hard-won and legendary reputation for spotting greatness in artists long before the rest of the world caught up.

There are countless examples, but one of our favourites is Maverick Sabre. By the end of the 2000s Mav had become a bit of a cult hero back home in Ireland, but besides a few solo tracks most of his work was as a featured artist for local rappers and MCs.

In 2009, two years before his breakout collab with Chase & Status ("Fire In Your Eyes"), Jamal hit up the young soul singer for an A64 session (the acoustic counterpart to the F64 freestyle series. In 2011, just before "Fire In Your Eyes" and the debut solo album that would follow, Jamal invited him back again for a follow-up.

Here he is performing "I Need", the lead single on his debut album, Lonely Are The Brave. It was an unassuming performance, recorded by the side of the road against the backdrop of noisy London traffic, but it set the tone for the album and marked the official transition from sought-after featured artist into fully-fledged headliner.
