HERITAGE: 'Sun, Sea And UKG' Captures How Ayia Napa Became The Essential Spot For UK Garage In The Late '90s (2018)

July 10, 2019

In the late 1990s, UK garage was king—and that went double for the island of Ayia Napa.

House music fans had Ibiza, techno heads had Berlin, but at the turn of the millennium, the Cypriot town Ayia Napa was the essential destination for UKG fans. It was an idyllic home away from home where names like DJ Luck and MC Neat, Heartless Crew and So Solid could be heard in packed out clubs like Insomnia and sun-soaked beach parties.

Boiler Room's Sun, Sea And UKG, which you can watch in full below, chronicled those hedonistic years with a heap of archive footage and interviews with countless titans like Megaman, MC Creed, Norris 'Da Boss' Windross, A.M. SNiPER, Kele Le Roc, Martin 'Liberty' Larner, DJ Spoony, Mikee B, MC DT, Melody MC Blakey, CKD, DJ Luck, MC Neat, Trigger, Nick Power, Little Charlie, Tziambouris Costas, Masterstepz, Brian B, Paul K, Anna Kiss, Tony Dynamou, Laura Hughes and, the man credited with starting it all, DJ S.

The story goes that DJ S first went to Ayia Napa on his honeymoon in 1998 with his new wife and his record bag. Instantly falling in love with the place, he linked up with Napa club promoter Nick Power and together, with the rest of the scene not far behind, the set to work bringing UKG to the island. The rest, as you'll see below, was history.
