HERITAGE: Revisit This Classic Freestyle From UK Rap Legend Dubz (2006)

November 25, 2020

An unsung hero in the history of UK rap, Dubz is a figure whose contribution to the scene's formative years never quite got the mainstream recognition it deserved.

In the 2000s he was one third of the Cream Cartel alongside Page and Young Meth. The trio's crowning achievement was The Business mixtape, a 22-track calling card that fused a road rap framework with touches of grime and garage (including an appearance from Asher D).

Alongside studio cuts, it also collected together several of their freestyles, including this solid gold session from 2006 filmed by Streetzinc. Sadly, a lot of their solo and group releases have been lost to the mists of expired file-sharing links, but if you can find them, your first port of call should be The Business and then Dubz's Ard Doe mixtape.

More recently, after a brief quiet spell, Dubz has made a return with a handful of singles in the past couple of years. Hopefully that's going to continue, because UK rap's fortunes are at an all-time high right now and the world is primed and ready for Dubz to take his rightful place as a rap scene hall-of-famer.
