HERITAGE: Ratlin & Boss Belly Jump On Mavado's Version Of "Genesis Riddim" For This UK Rap Gold (2011)

July 12, 2022

Back in 2011, Ratlin was enjoying a huge run, soundtracking summer in the capital with two absolutely massive hits.

First came "Messiah Remix" in June, using the instrumental from Mavado's tune of the same name, and then, before anyone had time to breathe, he immediately returned with Boss Belly to repurpose Mavado's version of "Genesis Riddim" and fashion it into another modern rap classic.

Both tunes landed at absolutely the most perfect time and completely lit up the rap scene. But it isn't just important because it paved the way for the current generation to dominate the charts (which it did), but it's also important as a sign of just how large the influence of dancehall looms over UK rap scene and how integral it is to the core of UK rap's identity.

Funnily enough, the two tunes have one more thing in common: a cameo from a certain chart-topping rapper from the same estate.
