Back in 2015, when the renewed interest in grime was at its peak, 1xtra did a UK-wide search for what they called the Next In Grime (#NextInGrime).

The entries were cut down and put through different stages, eventually narrowing it down to the final three MCs — Mez, Karnage and Marshy — who took got together in the 1Xtra studio to battle it out. Judging their efforts were DJ Target, Big Narstie and TRENCH's very own Hyperfrank.

The final, below, was split into five rounds designed to test specific mic skills. For the first round the three MCs had to take turns on a track over Lethal Bizzle's "Forward" riddim by Dexplicit; the second saw each MC build the bars around a specific word given to them by the judges; the third was The Send Round, which was a straight-up clash; and then the fourth and fifth rounds were the knock-out stages, ultimately leaving us with a winner.
