HERITAGE: Normski Welcomes SL2 To The Stage In This Iconic Performance Of Their Hit "DJs Take Control" (1991)

Back in the late 1980s and early '90s, the back-and-forth exchange of inspiration going on between hip-hop and rave culture gave us one of the most exciting periods in music history. It was a situation fairly unique to the UK—at least to that degree. It's because of that two-way cultural trade that we got both Normski and hardcore pioneers SL2.

The latter, formed in 1985 by DJs Matt "Slipmatt" Nelson and John "Lime" Fernandez, before folding in emcee Jason "Jay-J" James, they started out as residents at Raindance, the party promoting company run by Nelson's brother Paul. Eventually, they started producing their own tunes, blending their combined love of rap and fast-paced dance music just in time to capitalise on the burgeoning hardcore and breakbeat scene rising up in the early '90s.

That, of course, was perfectly aligned with what Normski was all about. He'd been making a name for himself as a TV presenter, pushing both hip-hop and rave culture on various TV shows he fronted. So this appearance on Normski's BBC2 show Dance Energy in 1991 was practically written in the stars. Though SL2's success peaked with "On A Ragga Tip" the following year, they were already massive underground stars and, as you can tell from the frantic, sweat-soaked dancing, their "DJs Take Control" was still a guaranteed floor-filler.
