HERITAGE: NoLay And Skepta Debate The Complex Vs Simplistic MCs (2008)

April 09, 2021

Back in 2007, Bashy released the original version of his historic single "Black Boys", following it up soon after with no fewer than five remixes featuring everyone from Akala and the late Ty through to Skepta, NoLay and Big Narstie.

Videos exist for every version and while shooting one of the remix videos, Skepta and NoLay got to talking about the merits of complex lyricism compared to more simplistic bars. NoLay favours the former — they even touch on her breakout hit, "Unorthodox Daughter", where she famously announced "Soundboy, I'll have your guts for garters!" — while Skepta vouches for the latter.

Both sides make convincing arguments; Skepta argues it's better to have easily remembered bars that even non-English speaking fans can quote, while NoLay counters that even the most fast-talking, layered rhymes can win you international success. It's an age old debate and we doubt either side was convinced by the other's argument, but it's fascinating to hear the thought processes that MCs put into their various flows.
