HERITAGE: Meridian Dan, Alongside Jme And Big H, Inject New Energy Into Grime With Their Chart-Topping "German Whip" (2013)

January 21, 2020

It feels like just yesterday that "German Whip" dropped, holding the door open for Skepta and Jme's "That's Not Me" and kickstarting grime's revival in the process. But that was six years ago, way back in 2013.

"German Whip" seemed to come out of nowhere, but there was clearly something in the air because from 2014 onwards it felt like a huge groundswell happening up and down the country, as if the scene had been bubbling away under the surface, waiting to boil over.

Between them, Meridian Dan, Big H, Skepta and Jme (all of whom came up in Meridian Crew) were the architects of grime's return to dominance and subsequent Stateside invasion. Right now, things may have hit a bit of a lull while drill and rap dominate, but grime will return to the top again. It always does.
