HERITAGE: Manchester's S.B.D., Wrigz, Hypes And More Show Tim & Barry How They Shell On Grime (2010)

Whether or not it's always had the shine it deserved, Manchester's music scene has always been a hotbed of talent in every single genre. Of course know about the Aitch and Bugzy Malone, but on an underground hero, the North West city's been giving us world class MCs for as long as grime's existed.

Back in 2010, Tim & Barry made the trip up north to spotlight some of the up-and-comers and overlooked legends. This eight-minute session featured SBD, a Channel U star thanks to a barbed takedown of his absent father called "Where Are You Now?", Wrigz (who featured on Wiley's all-star "She Likes To (England 10)" the year before), Hypes of Highrise Crew (who made regular appearances on radio up and down the country), XP Burst Gang (who put in a lot of work connecting Manchester and London artists) and more giving us a perfect example of the 0161 crowd moving in their own direction, creating a sound and style all of their own.

Unfortunately, save for a brief return a few years ago, SBD seems to have largely disappeared from the music world, but Wrigz remains a celebrated figure in Manchester's rap scene and dropped his latest single, "Therapy", just last month. XP is still going strong and dropped an album last year. Hypes, meanwhile, is still making regular drops and his son, Young Tobz, is already starting to carve out a career in rap as well.
