HERITAGE: Krispy 3 Put Chorley On The Map With Their Classic UK Rap Single "On Tempo ('94 Lick)" (1993)

Chorley in Lancashire might not be the first town you'd think of when it comes to UK rap's history, but seminal duo Krispy 3 — aka Microphne D.O.N. and Mr. Wiz — were one of the most important UK hip-hop acts ever.

From 1990 through the rest of the decade, Krispy 3 released three albums and countless EPs and singles. Today we're highlighting just one of those many contributions to the hip-hop canon: "On Tempo ('94 Lick)" from the Herd Out Da Gate EP.

A storming, sub zero boom bap cut that could just as easily have come from Brooklyn or Queens, it's not until the bars start flowing that the track's UK identity comes out. This was still the early days, but UK accents were starting to become more accepted in rap and Krispy 3 played a big role in making that happen.
