HERITAGE: Kamaal Williams And Mez Unite The Worlds Of Jazz And Grime In This Smooth And Skippy Tim & Barry Special (2017)

Three years ago, Mez made the inspired decision to freestyle of Kamaal Williams' eight-minute jazz epic "Strings Of Light". The result was a cerebral, mind-expanding lyrical masterclass and the kind of experimentalism that made grime so original in the first place.

Naturally, the freestyle turned a lot of heads, including that of Kamaal Williams himself, who teamed up with Mez to take the grime-jazz fusion to the next logical step. In their Tim & Barry session from 2017 the pair take things straight to outer space with Williams and his band improvising on various instruments while Mez hops from jumpy synth riffs to skittish, unpredictable drum patterns with total ease.

When grime enjoys its next resurgence, jazz crossovers would be a welcome new direction.
