HERITAGE: Goldie Gives This Humble Speech As He Accepts The MOBO Award For 'Best Jungle Act' (1996)

In the mid-1990s, as drum & bass and jungle were bursting out of the underground and into the mainstream consciousness, Goldie was a star. His debut album Timeless became jewel in the scene's crown and he became the most in-demand artist and producer going. Invitations to produce for David Bowie, magazine covers, movie roles all beckoned, but so did the tabloids, brandishing him "arrogant" and "unpredictable".

But, the truth about the Walsall-born DJ, producer and label-owner was far more humble, as his acceptance speech for 'Best Jungle Act' at the 1996 MOBO Awards showed. Despite being known as a larger than life character, he said only a few words, dedicating the award to Grooverider, an early patron of Goldie's, and all the other DJs that kept jungle alive and helped export it around the globe.
