HERITAGE: Seminal R&B Duo Floetry Perform "Floetic" Live At The House Of Blues, New Orleans 2003

January 12, 2018

Seminal UK rap and R&B duo Floetry—aka Marsha "the Songstress" Ambrosius from Liverpool and Natalie "the Floacist" Stewart from London—were one of the most important, if not overlooked, duos to come out of the UK.

Beginning in the late '90s as poets, writing songs for the likes of Jill Scott, Bilal and even Michael Jackson, Floetry used poetry as the foundation for their approach to music. In "Floetic", one of their defining hits, the influence of performance poetry on their flows has an air of De La Soul or Tribe had they been from the UK. Equally, the instrumentals they used were jazzy and free-flowing in much the same way.

In 2006, after three albums, chart success, collabs with the likes of Mos Def and Common, Floetry parted ways and pursued their own solo careers. They did briefly reunite on stage in 2015, but that looks like it was a one-off. So while we probably won't see another reunion any time soon, at least we can relive them at their peak, performing "Floetic" live at the New Orleans House Of Blues in 2003.
