HERITAGE: Estelle Shares The Story Behind "American Boy" Over A Roast Dinner With Chip (2008)

December 10, 2021

Make no mistake, when Estelle released "American Boy" with Kanye back in 2008, she was already a star. Her breakout "1980" had already hit it big and, as it turns out in this chat with Vula and Chip (back when he was still Chipmunk), she was arguably even more of star in the States.

Not only that, but it turns out she wasn't even that serious about "American Boy" at first. Doing her best impression of Su Pollard's ditsy character Peggy from '80s sitcom Hi-de-Hi, it originally started as a joke about all the attention she was getting from guys in America. Of course, she eventually saw the bigger picture, realised it was a hit and a global phenomenon was born, but it's interesting to see the surprising and slightly bizarre places a hit can come from.
