HERITAGE: DJ Whoo Kid Talks On How Witnessing Giggs' Music In The Clubs Made Him Take Notice Of The UK Scene (2011)

June 21, 2022

DJ Whoo Kid's reputation in the mixtape world is untouchable. A true pioneer, he's hosted tapes for a lot of the biggest names in hip-hop, from 50 Cent to Snoop Dogg and even a posthumous 2Pac mixtape. More recently, he's hosted mixtapes for some of our own homegrown heroes, including Tinie Tempah, Ghetts, and Giggs. In this Amaru Don TV interview, he details his journey into the UK scene and his initial thoughts on the big names.

He explains how he was first introduced to UK rap and, by his own admission, didn't fully get it at first. Whether it was the accents, the slang or just the style itself, he doesn't say, but credit to him for persisting and giving grime and UK rap a chance.

Impressed and intrigued by the hero status of Dizzee and Giggs, and their effect on UK crowds, Whoo Kid says he reached out to Skepta (whose Community Payback mixtape Whoo Kid hosted the same year as this interview) who in turn introduced him to Giggs.

"I just hit his manager," Whoo Kid explains. "I was just like 'yo, everywhere I go, when they play his records, the club is crazy, people jumping up, and I see the Jamaican come out of everybody.'

"There's Jamaicans everywhere, but I see the Jamaicans when Giggs' shit comes on. Whether you're African or whatever, you are Jamaican when Giggs' shit comes on. Everybody's like 'brp brp brp!'"

He goes onto explain that the nature of the show he hosted at the time on Sirius XM meant he had an international listernship and so it made perfect sense to start integrating artists from other countries. And the rest, as they say, is history.
