HERITAGE: Dizzee Rascal Lights Up The Stage During Pharrell's Performance Of "Lapdance" (2004)

September 03, 2021

As early as the 2000s, the "MTV isn't what it used to be" crowd were still pretty loud, but even they would have to concede that there were plenty of era-defining cultural touchstones in that period. One of them, originally broadcast in 2004, was a crossover not just in genre, but in eras.

Over in America, Pharrell and N*E*R*D were all but deified, celebrated as heroes in rap, rock and pop, and this MTV special happened right at the height of their influence as a unit. Throughout the show, where they performed a bunch of their hits, including "She Wants To Move", "Frontin", "Rockstar" and "Lapdance", they used their considerable pulling power to bring out Justin Timberlake, Spymob, Will.i.am and, Dizzee Rascal.

Skip to 16:10 to see a fresh-faced Dizz run up on stage for a riotous performance of "Lapdance". Dizzee's been open about being inspired by Dirty South rap, Timbaland and a lot of the same sounds that informed N*E*R*D's In Search Of... Honestly, we're just surprised there was never a formal collab between the two.
