HERITAGE: Crazy Cousinz Flip Singer Malika’s (fka Meleka) Funky House Anthem "Go" (2009)

April 07, 2023

Crazy Cousinz has a formidable reputation in UK dance music and it's well-deserved. It started out as a four-piece producer collective including Flukes, Paleface, Kodi Starr, and Play, but for most of the peak UK funky years years, it was slimmed down to a duo when the latter two members departed. Paleface has since gone off to do other things, but the Crazy Cousinz name lives on and, buoyed by "One Dance", new generations have been drawn to them and the sound of funky.

It was as much their remixes as their productions that captured the attention of the wider public (although their DJ sets certainly kept them a loyal fanbase in London). Next to "Do You Mind", this remix of Meleka's "Go" is another stone-cold classic and just as deserving of a place in the history books.

Meleka—born Malika Ferguson—had originally started as a songwriter, sticking to the background before the North London producers connected with her and turned "Go" into the tears-on-the-dancefloor banger that we know and love.

She's still performing as well, now under her government name, Malika. What's more, she's also still got a soft spot for club music as well, most notably featuring on Nathan Dawe's version of "Flowers" in 2019.
