HERITAGE: Clapton Legend Rimzee Drops "Keep Stacking" From His Debut Mixtape 'Upper Clapton Dream' (2012)

December 02, 2022

There's a reason Rimzee referred back to his 2012 tape Upper Clapton Dream for his 2020 comeback project—and it wasn't just a case of poetically bookending his time away from the music game.

Upper Clapton Dream was a landmark mixtape that arrived at road rap's peak, just a year or so before grime would have its next resurgence. Referencing the late Black The Ripper's Edmonton Dream from 2009, it was Rimzee's debut full-length and became a huge success in East London. It was the first tape on Mixtape Madness to reach the milestone of 10,000 downloads and should have been the springboard to major success.

As we all know, life got in the way and his path to the top had to be put on pause, but thankfully with Part 2 he was able to pick up where he left off and quite possibly take his career even further than he could have 10 years ago. Regardless of the what ifs, the hunger, passion and energy on this project is something a lot of today's young stars could take notes from—and that's never more true than on this absolute thumper, "Keep Stacking".

It's also a plain-and-simple example of how to sample in rap. And if you budding producers are wondering, Electric Light Orchestra have a whole mountain of bangers you might want to look to (but for goodness' sake, please clear them).
