HERITAGE: British Reggae Singer Trevor Walters Covers Lionel Ritchie's "Stuck On You" (1984)

After the foundations were laid by the lovers rock pioneers of the 1970s, the links between reggae and soul were long-established by the 1980s and, in a lot of ways, a bit of a radio staple.

One of the most outstanding examples of that crossover was this cover of Lionel Ritchie's "Stuck On You" by Trevor Walters. With is distinctive soprano voice, his vocals were immediately recognisable on every record he touched and adding that sweet yet melancholic style to old soul records became something of a signature for him.

Walters recorded another cover the following year, a cover of William DeVaughn's "Blood's Thicker Than Water", but for us, this bittersweet take on Lionel was the most effective.

Here he is, performing the track on Top Of The Pops, surrounded by the somewhat chaotic throng of new romantics, punks and goths doing their best to find the beat.
