HERITAGE: Bashy's "Ransom" Video With Scorcher And Wretch 32 Set The Tone For The Meeting Of UK Rap And Filmmaking (2009)

September 06, 2019

The meeting of UK rap and filmmaking right now in projects like Top Boy and Rapman's Blue Story is proving more popular than ever right now, enjoying critical and commercial success on both sides of the Atlantic, and some of our favourite rappers and MCs are doing just as well as actors.

We've all seen Ashley Walters and Kano in Top Boy (with appearances from Dave and Little Simz due for the third series), and Rapman's Shiro's Story series made actors of Konan, Deno, Headie One and the late Cadet. But before that, Ashley 'Bashy' Thomas (whose credits now include Black Mirror, 24: Legacy and Top Boy 3), Scorcher and Wretch 32 were setting the tone for the whole thing with the short film for their Naughty Boy-produced collab "Ransom".

Directed by Adam Brown and Greg Duffield, the video also featured appearances from Capital Xtra presenter Shanie Ryan and Bourne Ultimatum actor Joey Ansah. Clocking in at just over six minutes long, they pack in a lot of twists and turns before the dramatic conclusion.
